How the 90/180 rule works
The rule is simple to state but easy to miscount: you may spend at most 90 days in any rolling 180-day period. The window is not a fixed calendar block — it moves forward every day. To check your status on a date, count the days you were present in Schengen during the 180 days leading up to (and including) it. As old days drop out of the back of the window, you slowly regain allowance.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the Schengen 90/180 rule?
- Non-EU visitors may stay a maximum of 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the Schengen area. The 180-day window moves with you — on any given day, you look back 180 days and count how many of those you were present.
- Do the entry and exit days both count?
- Yes. The day you enter and the day you leave the Schengen area each count as a full day of presence, even if you only spend a few hours.
- Which countries are in the Schengen area?
- The Schengen area covers most of the EU plus a few others (such as Switzerland, Norway and Iceland) — but not all. Ireland, for example, is outside it. Always confirm the current list before you travel.
- What happens if I overstay?
- Overstaying can lead to fines, deportation and entry bans of several years. This tool helps you avoid that, but it is not legal advice — always verify with the relevant authorities.
